Infectious mononucleosis, also called grandular fever because of the presence of generalized lymphadenopathy, is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the Herpesviridae family. Sore throat, tonsillar enlargement and palatal petechiae can also occur, with the potential complications of splenomegaly, hepatitis and autoimmune hemolytic disorders.
